Given the significant rise in health education and the usage and popularity of nutritional, therapeutic and holistic products and services it is clear that people are far more interested in their health and wellbeing than they were decades ago.

As a result this has presented important issues to consider.

Have you given any thought to how frequently you consume special foods and or beverages that contribute to your wellbeing, in any one day or in any week? As well, think about the various holistic services you have on a regular basis, perhaps remedial treatments like massage, acupuncture or osteopathy.

What important foods or remedies do you take regularly, what are you intolerant or allergic to, what do you intensely dislike, or what simply does not agree with you?

So where are all these questions leading?

If you treat your health seriously now, and you do undertake or use regular holistic treatments or products and you do seriously watch what you consume, then consider this:

If you were suddenly unable to convey to others your important health needs or the health and wellbeing practices you had regularly used, would that concern you?

For many people the answer would be ABSOLUTELY YES!

The Advanced Health Directive document, which you should have established, is where you can detail all the answers to questions such as those above.

By listing all your regular health and wellbeing practices, in addition to those your medical doctor may have recorded, you will be doing yourself a huge favour if the day comes when you are incapacitated or moved to a care facility.

Give a thought to all the issues you consider important for your wellbeing.

Call it what you like, but the issue is still the same – your health and comfort.

Start listing the practices and products as you use or do them. It could include your regular massages, perhaps you only consume filtered or alkaline water, perhaps you avoid fluoride, keep the list going right down to the special tooth paste and deodorant, shampoo and conditioner you use, even toilet paper (perhaps you use products from health shops, or you obtain therapeutic products from a naturopath, or a Doctor of Nutritional Medicine). This list is in addition to any prescribed medications that also need to be listed.

While there are many people who view their wellbeing in a very serious light, there are others who do not consider these issues as being at all important.

Our health is our most precious asset and we need to treat it that way, which is why there are still further issues to consider documenting.

These include: the special pillow you sleep on, the exercises you do, e.g. for your back; how you like your tea or coffee, or other beverages, and how frequently do you have these – specify a time if that’s important to you; what kind of cookies (if at all) you enjoy, candy or lollies (no, forget those!).

Perhaps you enjoy dark organic chocolate with a high cocoa content but you won’t touch regular chocolate, you do use a little sugar (is it brow or…), or you consume rice, oat or soy milk (identify which brand); or whether you are a vegetarian, or prefer organic red meat or chicken, perhaps you can eat cheese or yoghurt but only made from sheep or goat milk. And these next points are very important – you avoid or are intolerant to wheat, yeast, crustaceans, reef or shellfish, whey protein, etc., the list can go on.

List everything that is important to you.

Think about the food intolerances you may have! Think about your allergies! List them. Are they properly recorded with a medical doctor or qualified naturopath?

To be given foods you do not eat and have not eaten for years could be an extremely distressing situation for you, even negatively affecting your health.

What chemicals do you avoid and have done so for a long time?
Some people can have an anaphylactic shock, or even die if they are exposed to or consume foods or substances to which they are intolerant or allergic. If this is the case, then making others aware of this issue is extremely important. Yet many people do not ensure these health matters are recorded correctly. Your life could depend on it!

Another example: perhaps you have a distinct intolerance, for example, to a dairy protein that happens to be an ingredient in a vast range of foods and protein powders, which many people consume today. If you consume only a rice protein product, what would happen to you if you were given a dairy protein? I am sure you know!

List all the health issues that are important to you and list those or any other important facts that may not be widely known amongst your family and friends.

Perhaps you are wildly allergic or intolerant to flowers with a strong fragrance, various chemicals, colourings and preservatives in foods, sulphur (in medication or the smell), or eating broccoli, garlic, onions, or dried fruits distresses you – what other foods are there?

Some medications, like penicillin, may cause you distinct distress, and while your doctors should have this information, what if they don’t?

Perhaps you have just moved and you have not requested your medical and health files to be transferred yet.

Today people seek advice and care from several different medical and holistic practitioners and some of their reports and records are not cross-referenced with the other practitioners.

Do not fall into the trap of saying, “Oh my husband knows, my wife knows, my partner knows what’s important to me and what I take.”
They may know your health needs, but what if they are not around, what then?

You could say, well it won’t matter then. But you don’t know that.

It’s easy to say now, “Oh I don’t have the time or I can’t be bothered…” but if an unfortunate situation or illness was to occur and you had not taken the time to document this important information, you could jeopardise your health.

Your comfort and wellbeing is paramount.

If you treat it seriously now, treat it seriously for your future. When you have recorded all this information provide a copy to your practitioners and to your lawyer and have them include this information in your file, along with your Will, EPA and AHD.

A ‘Simple Insurance‘ is what this issue is all about.
